Clearing and Bed Cleanup

• Debris removal: We remove weeds, fallen leaves, old mulch (if requested), sticks, and any trash from the beds. If existing mulch is minimal and in good condition, we may rejuvenate rather than fully remove it.

• Pruning and trimming: Light pruning and cleaning up dead growth around plants is performed as needed to improve plant health and ensure even mulch distribution.

• Edging and borders: We restore or define bed edges—trimming turf back, re-cutting borders, or lifting edging materials—to create clean, consistent lines. If you prefer a natural edge, we match the existing style.

Soil Preparation

• Surface conditioning: We break up compacted soil and remove weeds by hand or with mechanical tools. For persistent weeds, we hand-pull roots to reduce regrowth.

• Soil amendments (optional): If requested or recommended, we incorporate soil amendments (compost, topsoil, or soil conditioner) to improve drainage and fertility before mulching.

• Pre-emergent application (optional): Where appropriate and approved by you, we apply a pre-emergent herbicide to reduce future weed germination. We follow label instructions and consider proximity to edible plants.

Protection of Plants and Structures

• Plant protection: We carefully work around trunks and stems, keeping mulch away from direct contact with tree bark and crown of shrubs to prevent rot and pest problems. Mulch is typically kept 2–3 inches from stems and trunks.

• Around plants: Mulch is volcano-avoidant—kept away from the base of trees and crowns as noted above—and formed into a donut shape when necessary to promote airflow and prevent rot.

Finishing Touches and Cleanup

• Final grading and tamping: We lightly grade the mulch to ensure consistent coverage and a professional look, removing lumps and correcting high or low spots.

• Blow-off and sweep: Hard surfaces are cleaned of stray mulch by blowing and sweeping. We remove all job-related debris and leave the property tidy.

• Client walk-through: We conduct a brief walk-through with you to confirm satisfaction, point out care recommendations, and note any special considerations.

Follow-up Care and Maintenance Recommendations

• Watering: We advise on watering schedules after installation—how to water so that mulch settles evenly without displacing material.

• Seasonal upkeep: Recommended refresh intervals are typically annual to biennial depending on mulch type and desired appearance. We can provide scheduled refresh service.

• Weed control and inspection: We recommend periodic inspection for weeds, pests, and mulch compaction. Light raking and spot replacement extend mulch life and maintain health of plants.

• Long-term considerations: We advise on reapplying mulch thickness, rotating mulch types if desired, and when to fully remove old mulch to prevent excessive decomposition layers.
